Rights for Women in Colombian Peace Agreement

In an extraordinary step, the Colombian government and FARC rebels said they will guarantee specific rights for women in a peace agreement, which soon could end 50 years of conflict.

As part of the deal, a commission will be set up to investigate sexual violence as a means of providing a voice for women and recognition for their suffering. Furthermore, amnesties will be denied for crimes involving sexual violence. The agreement includes the possibility to receive compensation and guarantees women equal rights to buy and own land.

A high-profile UN official, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, says such a deal should be used as an example in other conflicts.
